Periodontal Treatment

Periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss. Affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth, some of the first symptoms patients experience include red, swollen, and tender gums. The first stage of periodontal disease is gingivitis, and the condition of the gums can be restored relatively easily with a professional cleaning and proper oral hygiene. However, when left untreated, the disease can advance and permanently damage the gums, tissue, and bone supporting the teeth. This progressive stage of the disease is known as periodontitis. Eventually the gums will begin to separate from the teeth, forming pockets in which bacteria can thrive.

It is important that patients are treated as soon as possible if they develop periodontal disease. When left untreated, sufferers can lose one or more teeth. Residents throughout Virginia can schedule an appointment to find out if they have periodontal disease and need treatment. Dr. Bream has the experience to provide patients with an accurate diagnosis and can explain the periodontal treatment options available to you. Periodontal treatments can include scaling and planing, medications, and surgery. At Bream Family Dental Care, we understand that many patients may be nervous about undergoing periodontal treatment. Root Canals

Unlike periodontal treatment, which works to improve the health of the structures supporting the teeth, a root canal treatment works to improve the area inside of the tooth. Inside each tooth is the pulp, which contains tissue and nerve fibers. If the pulp becomes infected with bacteria, it can damage the tooth and cause pain. During a root canal, the decayed portions of the pulp are removed and the inside of the tooth is restored to health. Following a root canal, patients may need a porcelain crown to provide support to the affected tooth.
